I dunno, I don't see any advantages to just having a regular ELM327 and then a nice app to display and log the information. His adapter doesn't seem to offer anything new and his app will be custom tailored to the adapter. Sure it's still open source, but it would be much more open-sourcier if the app worked with regular 327 modules as well.
You need a smartphone to run Freematics and if you already have a smartphone/tablet, why not use its gps and g-sensor? I guess the only difference is having g-sensor and gps onboard the 327 and then sending this data package to the phone, instead of collecting it separately and joining it. I wouldn't think that's a non-negligible de-sync in data, but I'm not enough of a geek to figure that one out.
